What We Do

The Rockford Education Foundation (REF) provides funding for educational opportunities, both basic and innovative, in the Rockford community. We do this by supporting educational programs and services within the geographic boundaries of the Rockford Public Schools. With your help we can make a difference.

Rockford Education Foundation Awards $75,000 to Support Student Wellness and Safety in Rockford Public Schools

Rockford Education Foundation Awards $75,000 to Support Student Wellness and Safety in Rockford Public Schools

Rockford, MI — The Rockford Education Foundation (REF) is proud to announce a $75,000 investment in student wellness and school safety initiatives across Rockford Public Schools (RPS). This funding, made possible by the generous support of the community during The Taste event, will strengthen key programs that help create a safe and supportive learning environment for all students.

These initiatives include a range of programs designed to provide students with the tools, relationships, and resources they need to feel supported and succeed in school.

The funded programs are:

  • School Resource Officer Program – This funding will continue to support the three School Resource Officers (SROs) who work within Rockford Public School buildings.. SROs are not just security. They are a trusted presence who build relationships with students and staff. They help with classroom programs, monitor school safety after hours, and step in before issues escalate, making sure students feel safe and supported.

  • Counseling Dog Program Support – Counseling dogs provide students with a calming, comforting presence. They help students manage stress and feel more relaxed during difficult times. This funding will cover things like vet visits and other ongoing needs of the program, which REF helped launch by funding the purchase of the dogs.

  • Behavior Support Expansion – This program teaches students important life skills, like how to manage their emotions and make good choices. A new pilot program will bring behavior coaches into schools to work with teachers and staff to create a consistent approach to behavior expectations. This will help students get the guidance and support they need to succeed.

As some federal and state grants wind down, local support becomes more important than ever to maintain these valuable programs.

“We’re deeply thankful for the support from the Rockford Education Foundation and our community,” said Dr. Steve Matthews, Superintendent of Rockford Public Schools. “These programs are essential in helping students feel safe and supported, and they reflect our commitment to the well-being of every child in our district.”
